My Top Five Favourite Characters on Cardboard.
With a view to write an article simply honouring my favourite things in sleeves here are my top five favourite Vs characters at this time. Lets start of with a man who needs no introduction…
5. Superman – Metropolis Marvel
Having been a fervent Team Superman player ever since I participated in my first ever PCQ – incidentally also my first tournament – it should come as no surprise that the card I’ve been waiting my whole life for is a decent five drop character named Superman. And here he is in style, a beast against swarm and a Heavy Hitter against most curve decks this five drop does everything you want in a combat based deck, throw in the added perk of Indestructible and you have just made a formidable mid game that is sure to terrorise any opponents attack step.
4. Hulk – Gamma Rage
What I really love about this card is just how unstoppable he is, no matter what you do to him; he just gets madder and madder, isn’t it just perfect. I find this one of the most fitting superhero to super-cardboard-hero translations out there with his large stats, cool art and place as seven drop in one of my favourite decks ever (Avengers Leaders.) make him truly worthy as place four on my list. Especially when he’s backed up by…
3. Captain America – Super Soldier
Once again this is another choice based on its correlation between a strong effect and its justification. On attack Captain America is just too much of a leader to let anyone standing near him get stunned, either by throwing himself or his shield in the way or simply by inspiring you to fight harder than you’ve ever fought before, he makes sure your around to fight another day. On defence he doesn’t just sit there either, supporting anyone who comes under enemy fire he is sure to make it that much harder to take down any allies that stick close to him. Throw in the added bonus that he is one of my all time favourite characters (Yes I wanted him to beat Batman) and you have a nigh on perfect card.
2. Thing – Heavy Hitter
Anyone ever having read my article on Marvel Origins validity in relation to Bring Your Own Set should know that this is one of my all time favourite cards (anyone not having read it, Tsk Tsk). I’m not quite sure what it is about this card I love so much, some would argue that the Metropolis Marvel does the same job, just better. I would argue that he doesn’t shout It’s Clobbering Time at people and throw tree trunks around. I think I love him so much because he resembles The Thing so well, as a Beatstick who, as long as another member of the Fantastic Family are around, will do all he can to help them, no fancy tricks, no intricate plans – just a fist and a face that needs meeting. This isn’t to underestimate The Things complexity, and it is my love of the characters emotional centre hidden by the large, rocky exterior that really makes The Thing shine for me, sure this side isn’t represented on the card, but this is Ben doing what he does best, hitting people, heavily.
1. Beast Boy – Garfield Logan
It took me a long time to decide on my number one slot, at first I thought it was going to belong to the Heavy Hitter, his huge orange hands always forefront in my thoughts, but as time went on and I started penning down my list I realised that I had overlooked a card that has had its far share of being neglected, sure Beast Boy finds his home in a lot of Titans decks, but is always outshone by that most delectable three drop Roy Harper, and probably now by Red Star if you’ve been reading Dave and Mikes reviews of DC Legends over at www.the-kamiza.com. The reason Beast Boy makes the number one slot for me is partly down to his nature to take second place in a deck, how many times have you heard people whine about not hitting there favoured drop, I know I do it all the time if I miss Hal on three in my favourite JLA deck, however this never seems to occur in a Titans deck, whenever I see someone drop Beast Boy all I hear is ‘cool’, and a few turns later when he’s sitting pretty at a eight/eight or nine/nine the ‘cool’ goes to ‘awesome’. The opportunity to hail one of the best ‘second picks’ from Vs history is ultimately what won Beast Boy this top spot, that and my favourite theme song ever goes T-E-E-N T-I-T-A-N-S!!!
So there it is, my top five in all there glory, but how about you? Does Heavy Hitter not cut the mustard anymore? Should Captain America be replaced by Batman? It would be great to hear what your favourite five are so let us know, either here or on realms.
Long Live Vs!
