My Top Five Favourite Characters on Cardboard.

March 8, 2008 at 9:29 pm (Individual Cards.)

With a view to write an article simply honouring my favourite things in sleeves here are my top five favourite Vs characters at this time. Lets start of with a man who needs no introduction…

5. Superman – Metropolis Marvel

Having been a fervent Team Superman player ever since I participated in my first ever PCQ – incidentally also my first tournament – it should come as no surprise that the card I’ve been waiting my whole life for is a decent five drop character named Superman. And here he is in style, a beast against swarm and a Heavy Hitter against most curve decks this five drop does everything you want in a combat based deck, throw in the added perk of Indestructible and you have just made a formidable mid game that is sure to terrorise any opponents attack step.

4. Hulk – Gamma Rage

What I really love about this card is just how unstoppable he is, no matter what you do to him; he just gets madder and madder, isn’t it just perfect. I find this one of the most fitting superhero to super-cardboard-hero translations out there with his large stats, cool art and place as seven drop in one of my favourite decks ever (Avengers Leaders.) make him truly worthy as place four on my list. Especially when he’s backed up by…

3. Captain America – Super Soldier

Once again this is another choice based on its correlation between a strong effect and its justification. On attack Captain America is just too much of a leader to let anyone standing near him get stunned, either by throwing himself or his shield in the way or simply by inspiring you to fight harder than you’ve ever fought before, he makes sure your around to fight another day. On defence he doesn’t just sit there either, supporting anyone who comes under enemy fire he is sure to make it that much harder to take down any allies that stick close to him. Throw in the added bonus that he is one of my all time favourite characters (Yes I wanted him to beat Batman) and you have a nigh on perfect card.

2. Thing – Heavy Hitter

Anyone ever having read my article on Marvel Origins validity in relation to Bring Your Own Set should know that this is one of my all time favourite cards (anyone not having read it, Tsk Tsk). I’m not quite sure what it is about this card I love so much, some would argue that the Metropolis Marvel does the same job, just better. I would argue that he doesn’t shout It’s Clobbering Time at people and throw tree trunks around. I think I love him so much because he resembles The Thing so well, as a Beatstick who, as long as another member of the Fantastic Family are around, will do all he can to help them, no fancy tricks, no intricate plans – just a fist and a face that needs meeting. This isn’t to underestimate The Things complexity, and it is my love of the characters emotional centre hidden by the large, rocky exterior that really makes The Thing shine for me, sure this side isn’t represented on the card, but this is Ben doing what he does best, hitting people, heavily.

1. Beast Boy – Garfield Logan

It took me a long time to decide on my number one slot, at first I thought it was going to belong to the Heavy Hitter, his huge orange hands always forefront in my thoughts, but as time went on and I started penning down my list I realised that I had overlooked a card that has had its far share of being neglected, sure Beast Boy finds his home in a lot of Titans decks, but is always outshone by that most delectable three drop Roy Harper, and probably now by Red Star if you’ve been reading Dave and Mikes reviews of DC Legends over at www.the-kamiza.com. The reason Beast Boy makes the number one slot for me is partly down to his nature to take second place in a deck, how many times have you heard people whine about not hitting there favoured drop, I know I do it all the time if I miss Hal on three in my favourite JLA deck, however this never seems to occur in a Titans deck, whenever I see someone drop Beast Boy all I hear is ‘cool’, and a few turns later when he’s sitting pretty at a eight/eight or nine/nine the ‘cool’ goes to ‘awesome’. The opportunity to hail one of the best ‘second picks’ from Vs history is ultimately what won Beast Boy this top spot, that and my favourite theme song ever goes T-E-E-N T-I-T-A-N-S!!!

So there it is, my top five in all there glory, but how about you? Does Heavy Hitter not cut the mustard anymore? Should Captain America be replaced by Batman? It would be great to hear what your favourite five are so let us know, either here or on realms.

Not just a card game.

March 8, 2008 at 1:43 pm (Vs + Life.)

Vs and creativity.

Cards. Old Cards. Useless Old Cards. What to do with them? Well many people give them to new players as a way of stirring interest and recruiting new players, and this is probably the best use for them, and something I have done on occasion, but having been collecting for some time, and also purchasing en masse from retailers who stopped stocking Vs, I find myself in the unusual position of having TOO many cards at times.

So the question again, what to do with them? I pondered this very question for weeks, not wanting to put my cards into a dark cupboard where they wouldn’t see the light of day, not having anyone new to give cards too, I was stumped, one hundred percent. Then I moved into my new house, and my new room, my new, bare, dreary, cold room. Suddenly I had two problems, but each with the same answer; Versus Montage.

Not being the most creative type my sudden urge to design, construct and decorate my room was a weird and unfamiliar feel, the strike of lighting that hit me no doubt being similar to the one UDE felt when they first put comics, cards and combat together. I would build two collages, dedicated to the beginning of the game and what it started out to be. One would feature Doom fighting the Fantastic Four; the other would have the heroic X-men battling back against the Brotherhood.

Sketching the idea out in my head I decided that I didn’t simply want to bundle the teams together and throw them up on a wall, what I wanted more was for the piece to tell a story, one that would be fitting within any one of the comic books I was taking inspiration from. The other major factor for me was that I wanted the images to reflect the flavour on the cards, something not hard to do thanks to UDE building them around the themes of the comic books, but nonetheless something I wanted to stay true too.

So far I have only had time to finish one of my planned montages, namely the Fantastic Four Vs Doom, and I must say that on the whole I am quite proud of it, hopefully I will get a photo up here soon so you can judge for yourself but in the absence of a digital camera I will give a brief run down of one of the ‘set pieces’ I decided to construct.

The first scenario I made was simple yet also probably my favourite, in the centre sits Thing – The Ever Lovin’ Blue Eyed Thing surrounded by Doom Guards, Doom Bots, Robot Seekers and Robot Sentries, points for anyone who can see why those four specifically. Whilst a simple circular image I think I find this one so appealing down to the pictures it conjures in my mind, of The Thing stranded and alone in the centre of a million adversaries, yet still he keeps them at bay, throwing them, beating them, clobbering them until they are nothing more than a steaming wreck of bolts. Currently residing in the centre of my ‘Vs Wall’ it also draws attention to itself for its large and energized look.

This stream of creativity has not stopped with just the montage, finding it quite a time consuming activity I thought of other ways I could utilize my spare Vs cards, and ideas so far put into practice include Birthday cards (nothing like a Skrull soldier wishing you all the best!) and, one that might cause outrage, coasters. There’s nothing I enjoy more than setting my drink down in the knowledge that Nightcrawler or Cyclops is there to protect it.

This article has three main goals that I am trying to achieve, first and foremost to highlight how Vs goes beyond a simple (well, quite a complex) card game and can bring happiness to other areas of life, even lending itself to such activities as Arts and Craft. The second, and the hardest, is to try and inspire anyone reading this to look outside the normal use for unwanted items and put them to good use doing something out of the norm – note this isn’t just exclusive to your Vs cards. Thirdly I would like to see your ideas come to life, I’m not offering a prize, sorry but I am currently scrimping all my change together just to eat and postage to America is far out of my reach. Hopefully even without the draw of a prize you will still post your efforts either up here, on realms or on your own blogs. Have fun getting creative and don’t hold back.

Writing an essay and building a deck – one and the same?

March 6, 2008 at 7:48 pm (Vs + Life.)

Today I casually strode into my place of study, sat in my usual seat and prepared for what would turn out to be just another normal lecture, it was not until after the lecture that my friend turned to me and said “should we pick up our results for last term?” Trying to hide my nervousness I replied with a shrug and a “why not?” Getting to the results room I got that feeling that you get just before you start a tournament, the feeling that a bad game or two at the start and you have no hope for the rest of the day. Luckily for me I did well on most of my papers, but the one that stuck with me all today was my worst paper, the one I got a measly 56% percent on.

Now before you switch off thinking this is just a sob story about a bad essay I’ll tie it back in with Vs. You see I’m the sort of player who after they lose a game tries to analyse exactly why it happened, excluding such excuses as ‘I didn’t draw so and so’ or ‘he had a god hand’ as I find these to be counter beneficial, just as saying ‘the lecturer didn’t like me’ won’t help you net more marks next time around. I decided to compare my piece with my higher results (both A’s I’m happy to say) and I found a definite difference; the good essays were structured and had a clear aim, execution and conclusion, the bad essay did not.

It was this correlation that got me thinking about Vs, a mild skilled deck builder at best I remember back when I was hideous, I would try and make a deck capable of handling any situation, whilst also trying to fulfil a scattered game plan and no real end game, needless to say I lost a lot. As I started to play more I found that the more excuses I made for my losses the more times I lost, and it was only when I started being harsh on myself, telling myself it was my fault that I’d lost that I became a better player. The same can be said of bettering ones own academic work, looking it over with a critical eye rather than a self-important one will always leave you with a more interesting, concise essay.

Thinking more about the correlations between Academic Essays and Vs I found even more relations between the two, this time based around how applying the skills learned from one can directly benefit the latter. For example during a lecture on Scriptwriting we were told when your out of ideas, leave it for a while, don’t try and force your brain to find what’s missing, just relax for a few days or so and come back with what I like to call ‘fresh eyes’.

This same process is ideal for deck construction, sometimes when you’ve over-tested a deck and it’s still not quite hitting how it should be you can get really frustrated, and even be tempted to give up on it, I’ve found whenever this occurs if I leave it for a while, go and play a few fun games with friends then come back, normally the answer is right in front of me. I think this parallel exists due to the creative nature of building your own deck from scratch, and the creative process of writing a script; once again both need structure but also need to be personal to the individual.

Incidentally it is not only the Academic work that benefits Vs but also vice versa, this being a game of strategy, planning and design I think it is a perfect hobby to start ones brain working. The effect can even be bigger than this, for example how many ‘rouge decks’ have performed amazingly at PCs and PCQs, their surprise factor being key to their success. This reward for creativity actively encourages us as gamers to look at ideas from new directions, to search out previously unseen combinations of cards to try and get the edge on an opponent. This drive for success through the betterment of ones self, and more importantly ones mind, is a skill that will always help you, not even just in relation to academic work or Vs but in all areas of life.

To conclude I would just like to draw one final similarity between the two, namely that success is dependent on input, and thus so is the reward. I spent hardly any time preparing for the doomed essay, not researching relevant sources nor collecting information that would be helpful and inspirational, thus it failed. If we as a community do not want Vs to fail then all we need to do is keep putting in all the hard work I see evidence of every day on realms, tcgplayer and, of course, the blogs. If we continue to support the game and put our all into it then we will reap the maximum possible reward, fulfilment.

Your Game, Your Glory – Organized Play at Home.

March 6, 2008 at 4:56 pm (State of VS., Vs + Life.)

Let me say this right at the start, I love Vs tournaments. Lots. One thing I do not love however, is the view that the only way to enjoy Vs is within this competitive style of play. On the contrary the reason for me why Vs is such a good game is that it can be enjoyed on such a plethora of levels, whether deck testing for an upcoming Mega Event such as Weekends or Worlds, or simply kicking back with a few buddies, cracking a case of beer and playing long into the night.

It is on the later example that I’d like to focus in this article, and discussing the different ways in which, as players, we can derive more fun from our cards in a casual environment than we ever could playing the same deck for a whole two days straight. I was motivated to write this whilst reading people’s rants about price cuts/lack of product etc and how it would kill the game. Here in England, especially down in the rural south where I normally reside, it became nigh on impossible to get our hands on new cards without us all chipping in for boxes, which would inevitably led to debates about whose cards belonged to who. I now know this was foolish of us and will be trying to rectify the error of our ways as soon as Universe is released.

This is one of the many things that I hear people claim will eventually kill Vs, but for us it acted more as inspiration. Without any sanctioned events, and with nigh on seventy decks constructed, my fellow fanatic and me decided that there was only one real way to go. Entering sixty four decks into Mantis we hit pair, and our very own tournament began, but it wasn’t a knock out tournament so each round we played thirty two decks each, the results put into Mantis and the decks repaired, six rounds and many days later we had a deck which was victorious and counting the results of who won the most games I was pleasantly surprised to see I wasn’t too far behind Mikes, a player I’ve always held higher than myself.

Of course this style of tournament is quite restrictive to including just the two of us, so whenever the house becomes a bit more crowded we have another system where decks are lined up on the table and each assigned a number, you roll a dice and get a deck. Once again these tournaments would go on all night, and even though it was casual play with no prizes the time I came top of the group probably meant more to me than any PCQ placing.

Above both of the previous examples my personal favourite still remains the nine players and upwards multi duels, and sorry if calling a game of Vs a duel upsets anyone but old habits die hard. The reason being nothing is capable of getting so much conversation, laughter, love, hatred and swearing out of a group of close friends than trying to persuade someone that attacking anyone but you is the right way to go. It was during these often-raucous games that I believe my circle of players, and above all else – friends, became as close as we are.

Whilst not exactly new formats or completely original ideas, it gives us the chance to play with many decks that are normally associated with the other player/s. It was whilst thinking about the fun times I’ve had sat in our normal playing area that I realized UDE stopping Vs or support for Vs, whilst tragic, would still not destroy my love for the game, or stop me playing it.

What I really want to express here is don’t get too caught up in looking at what you can gain from Vs apart from having some of the best times of your life. Sure having a few thousand pounds/dollars on top would be nice, but it defiantly isn’t essential, all you really need, as often is the case in life, is a few close friends, a stack of cards and a case beer. Oh, and a dice!

  5. Old players coming back to the game – once again also over here.
  6. After so much nay saying still having the best community in a card game.
  7. The Legend sets doing so well. “Can I have some of tho…Damn they’ve gone.”
  8. The chance to finally get some of the aforementioned sets. Doubtful but hopeful.
  9. UDE listening to us. Thank you UDE.
  10. The amount of people I’ve talked to who are actively planning on going to the nationals.
  11. MWS Vs centred server. Finally!
  12. The casual gaming direction Vs is taking.
  13. And the biggest inspiration – the game itself.

Don’t let them get you down.

March 5, 2008 at 3:17 pm (Vs + Life.)

So I was sitting on MWS in the vain hope that a fellow VS player would connect, see my NO MAGIC OR WOW sign and join me for some friendly testing, and the great conversation and laughs that generally follow another game of what has to be the card game with the best community following going. The reason I am now writing this is because it struck what it is I love about VS, and surprisingly it’s not just game but the people behind it as well.

I have a MWS player with the handle DARK AVATER to thank for this revelation, signing on he proceeded to shuffle his deck, roll and then ask to see my library, obligingly I placed a few cards out and being relatively new to MWS asked if there was any way I could show the whole thing at once, the reply came; F*** YOUR SISTER WITH MAGIC. Now this isn’t the first time this has happened, it had already happened to me five times in the twenty or so minutes I’d been connected, sitting on MWS makes you a prime target for this sort of shenanigans, what I’m surprised about is the sheer lack of imagination or originality these people put into this simple ruse despite constantly playing a game that, like Vs, is supposed to promote creativity.

After kindly informing this rather abusive fellow that despite however funny he found this it was just a prime example that he must be either a)bored b)simplistic or c)conformist/unoriginal or perhaps a mixture or all three, he replied with the cry that was ringing around a while ago on every internet forum, chat room or café, THIS IS SPARTAAA! Is it me, but do Vs players normally have better conversational skills than that of a three year old.

Thinking about it I realised that if I read through a single thread on realms I will defiantly smile, normally laugh and sometimes have a fit. Increase those likelihoods to guaranteed and you have me at a tournament, where all of us gather for the one same thing, not to win, but to have a great day of Vs with like minded people. Okay and maybe to win a little. So why is it our game manages this and yet Magic players seem to primarily consist of what Stu would, semi-affectionally I think, call ‘Haters’.

I believe that the reason our game attracts such a wide range of people who are from various different backgrounds, but all of whom seem to get on despite disagreeing on various points and issues IS that our players are more original and speculative, I mean look at The Set Masters great fantasy set consisting of humour, solid play mechanics and perfect power balancing.

Now I must admit I have not had that much contact with Magic but from what I’ve seen there appears to be a lesser drive towards casual play, and therefore less drive to create the ‘Jank’ decks that many Vs players love (Major props to Poppythecats DCXperiment, itself a showcase of the sort of great ideas that make our game such a joy to play). It is our player bases constant strive for originality in deck ideas, keywords, play mechanics and life as a whole that makes Vs have that fresh feeling whenever you pick up a deck to play.

Now I wanted this not to be an attack on Magic or its player base, as I’m sure the game has its share of great people and great ideas but is just not suited for me, its just when such a large percentage of people insist on making themselves known as a negative, then the one connecting factor becomes associated with the people and itself is seen as negative. In an effort to get away from branding all Magic players as ignorant hate mongers I have decided to use any negativity they send at me, and meld it into creativity, the first example being this post itself.

So on a final positive note I want to say thank you to DARK AVATAR, you have opened my eyes to the way that with a little effort any negativity can be morphed into positive energy to fuel another post, another game, another deck. On that note MWS has just beeped again, maybe there’ll be a few more articles up tonight…

DC Origins – still kicking?

March 4, 2008 at 5:05 pm (Set reviews., Upcoming Tournaments.)

Continuing with the theme of the first review this will look at DC Origins and discuss which decks are viable for the UK Nationals, the aim being to eventually narrow down the list of decks to test with/against to a more manageable amount, so lets get involved with some old school Vs heroes.

Size doesn’t equal strength, and this has never been truer than when looking at one of the only decks that can manage to compete on a competitive level whenever it is played. I am of course talking about the Teen Titans. I am going to come right out and say it, I love Teen Titans, I love them so much I would marry Cyborg just to be one of them, and it is this coupled with there severe competitiveness that makes them another of my ‘first choices’ for the tournament.

The beauty of Titans is that they just seem to be prepared for anything, you come up against weenies and Terra teaches them a lesson, a Heavy Hitter swings into an open one drop or is trying to take down your Garth, hello Heroic Sacrifice. And I haven’t even mentioned Roy Harper yet…On top of all the tricks that Titans like to pack there is also straight forward pleasures, how many times have you gotten your Beast Boy so big you can’t help but smile like a little girl at a lollipop convention. Oh and Garth, beautiful, beautiful Garth.

The last thing that I really love about the Titans is the same thing that draws me to Common Enemy, the flavour of every card within the deck is nigh on perfect, and more so than Common Enemy the cards interact as if you were within there world, with Hawk and Dove helping each other on the field, never being apart, Tim Drake leading the battle as well as strategising, Koriand’r revenging all her fallen comrades or a rallying Teen Titans Go! bringing everyone back to fight again.

The second deck that pops to mind of when I think of DC Origins is my friends ‘staple deck’ that he’s played with in every major tournament he’s competed in, and he may do it again this April, combining both the Titans team attacking with Gotham’s negation and search The Brave and the Bold has certainly been tournament viable before and with Bring Your Own Set1 It could definitely be viable again, lets just look and see some of the things that make this deck worth considering.

One of the decks biggest advantages is it allows the tool boxing of Titans most tremendous teenagers, such as Terra and Garth, via a consistency improving team-up and Bat Signals. This means that you should never miss the character you need for any given situation, especially when you throw in Alfred Pennyworth, a man capable of finding whatever you need at the drop of a hat.

The other attractive feature of the deck is its ability to Fizzle opponents Plot Twists and is this negation of opponents Plot Twists that is one thing Titans lack on their own, but by pairing them up with their long term allies they gain this ability and more. The ‘more’ comes in the shape of the delightful Dynamic Duo, a card which not only stops your characters from being stunned back, but is easily reusable thanks to its ongoing text. It is in these parameters where Beast Boy can really shine – just remember to bring more than one dice!

Of course what would any Gotham Knights deck be without a Batman and The Brave and the Bold is no exception, on turn five we have Batman – Caped Crusader whose serious endurance burn can swing a game massively in your favour, especially if you throw in Dynamic Duo and Teen Titans Go! Then if you’ve missed the five drop Batman, or opted for Garth instead, we have The Dark Knight at seven, the beauty of the deck really lies in the first time you see someone swing into an opponents seven drop with everyone but Batman, Teen Titans Go! Exhaust them all to Batman’s effect, Garth back the Titans Go! Then exhaust them all over again, by this time the initially mild Batman has become a beast with attack and defence in the high twenties and he simply beats up a six drop for a very satisfying win. As I said: beautiful. This exceptional late game also makes a nice change from Titans struggling on turn seven.

However like any deck this one has its share of problems, for starters the consistency is not as high as I would like, especially with Enemy of my Enemy gone as a searcher, and a draw full of Gotham Knights or Teen Titans can really screw up your game plan. However when the deck does hit, and it does hit enough for it not to be a real problem, it can work outstandingly with answers for most situations and a board full of very cool characters. Needless to say I’m considering this deck as a high possibility too.

Unfortunately this is where I believe the competitive decks stop, with Gotham Knights, League of Assassins and Arkham Inmates all having problems with power and consistency. It’s a real shame as League is still one of my all time favourite teams and if I could take this to the tournament but with Locations and League-only characters from any set I’d probably take it just for the fun that it would undoubtedly prove, Arkham Inmates are another team that I have a strong love for and am sad to know that (from Origins at least) I can’t make a competitive deck.

Like its brother Marvel Origins, DOR has some of the strongest plot twists out there, for example Total Anarchy is still the best ongoing weenie hate that the game has, it is a shame though that the two decks that seem most competitive would be hindered rather than helped by this, however Mega-Blast is accessible, and with Savage Beatdown out of the picture this could figure highly in a both Titans and Brave and The Bold.

So another two decks added to the possible pile, and another set down, here’s hoping I can get through all of them and play test before April comes around.

I Hate QuikFate.

March 4, 2008 at 1:41 pm (Individual Cards.)

Yes okay so this isn’t the most observant statement, or the most original, but I will try my hardest to express myself in an interesting and fresh manner. There really are only four or five cards I hate in Vs, and four are found within this deck. Quiksilver and the artefacts are the bane of my existence, as stated on previous occasions I like games to last a while, for you and your opponent to have the time to chat, laugh and commence battle on an epic scale, there is something about crippling your opponent on turns two and three that just doesn’t seem to fit the flavour of Vs.

Another thing that I find makes a Card Game stale is when only one deck really competes well enough to find its way to the top in a certain meta, Yu-Gi-Oh had this with Chaos ages back, and now we’ve had it with Quikfate. I know other decks have been Top 8’ing but for the vast majority nearly every major tournament of recent times has been dominated by the speedy mutant.

However unlike with Yu-Gi-Oh where chaos just got banned outright, UDE has made the wonderful decision of listening to the players and giving us a way to fight back.

http://entertainment.upperdeck.com/App_Themes/VS_en/images/hobbyleague/hb_card2.jpg

Look at him, isn’t he beautiful? Instead of making a complicated Errata or making an unnecessary banning or three UDE has instead just handed control decks a new golden boy. Whilst not without his flaws (As Walter has pointed out it’s not so good on your initiate as they suit up after you’ve left the recruit step) but his decent body, capable of stunning Quik which is an interesting side not, and also his improvement of the Shadowpact, a team I’ve always loved but never gotten along with, make this one of the most desirable Hobby League prize cards thus far.

One of the most interesting things for me will be to see if people start packing him into there own Quikfate decks as a way of shooting an opponent down even if they do win the more desirable initiatives. Hopefully, for me at least, he will go some way in weakening the deck; however I do not want to see it disappear completely as it is another deck that adds to the overall Meta, I just wish to see it balanced out so more innovative decks can have a chance to shine through.

I’m not sure if he will kill Quikfate outright, or even stop people fating up Ahmed so much, but the fact that UDE has listened to it’s player base and put out something that can actively alter the meta for the better is a very positive sign that as a Card Game, and as a community, we are headed in the right direction.

Flashtastic Fun

March 4, 2008 at 1:09 pm (Decks!)

So after making the highly varied, multiple-legend JLA deck I wanted to do something a bit more straightforward, something that beat people in the face but still involved a Legend that I loved. After looking through the teams again I realised that there was only one choice for me, once again I was returning at to The Watchtower, but this time at Terminal Velocity.

Flashtastic Fun.

Characters:

Ray Palmer <> the Atom – Worlds Smallest Hero x 4

Vixen – Tantu Totem x 2

Red Tornado – Elemental Android x 4

Kendra Saunders <> Hawkgirl – Thanagarian Heroine x 4

Firehawk – Flaming Justice x 3

Bart Allen <> Kid Flash – Generation Fourth x 3

Barry Allen <> The Flash – Crimson Tornado x 4

Wally West <> The Flash – Keystone Cop x 4

Barry Allen <> The Flash – Founding Member x 3

Total – 31

Plot Twists:

Terminal Velocity x 4

Full Throttle x 3

Mightiest Heroes x 4

Battle Training x 4

Savage Beatdown x 4

Combat Reflexes x 4

A Clash of Worlds x 4

Total – 27

Locations:

Keystone City x 2

Total – 2

The idea of the deck is a simple one, play Flash, lots of Flash. The first two drops are both chosen for there nice attack, plus Palmers negation ability may be helpful later in the game when exhaustion effects start to target your bigger guys. The two drops were chosen for the same reason as the one drops, although it was a tough choice between Red Tornado and Black Lightning, in the end I sided with the guy who can stick around to soak up damage and deal more out as opposed to the possibly bigger Lightning.

Turn three is Firehawk’s time, his additional burn and not too shabby stats, coupled with Red’s recovery ability, should help to seize board control whether attacking or defending. Kid Flash is in there as a back up, just in case Firehawk was missed, but the main reason he makes the deck is to fuel the discard costs of Keystone City, Barry Allen and Full Throttle. Then again a six attack three drop isn’t something to be sneezed at, especially as you know you’ll keep the board whether he stuns or not. His different team affiliation is not too much of an issue, Keystone City hopefully will be around for re-enforcement and his ability allows him to team attack if necessary, one nice trick is to Terminal Velocity on one of your other Speedsters then throw Bart in as well, you don’t hit there board that hard, but this is all about hitting their life points whenever you can.

There’s only one play on each drop from here up and this means that search cards should never be played too early, as you may be cursing netting your three at the cost of a six drop come the planned final turn. The optimum initiatives is even, allowing you to make full use of Barry’s self readying ways, the Plot Twists contain a mixture of attack pumps, legend support, search and the ability to make Flash non-unique.

The Flash Legend support is an obvious inclusion as is the JLA search, the only debateable spot for me is A Clash of Worlds, but with both your four and six being incarnations of Barry it made it an essential inclusion to me, as Barry’s ability to stay around means he will almost defiantly see turn six. It’s just hard to include four of one card for one event, however it also allows you to re-drop Wally West on six if you miss Barry, and that’s not too bad a compromise.

This deck is not as personal to me as others I’ve made and is also quite simplistic to play, but it can be a great casual deck after all pumping a six drop flash and wreaking havoc on an opponents life points is just as much fun as it sounds. There is one inclusion that I’d really like to make and that’s the JLA recovery card Truth, Justice and Peace but without a more reliable way to get more of the same Flashes into hand it proved a bit of a hit and miss.

I have yet to test the deck out against any serious competition but it was made with casual play in mind, something that could be used just to mix things up a bit, hope you try it out and maybe even find it as fun as I did.

Origins review – the first of many!

March 4, 2008 at 5:19 am (Set reviews., Upcoming Tournaments.)

It is my intention to run through all the sets released, starting with the oldest, within the next month in order to determine which set I should choose to utilize in the Bring Your Own Set! UK Nationals. So with this in mind let’s dive right in at the deep end as I bring you a new review of the oldest set in Vs! Marvel Origins!

As well as being as old as you’re favourite Grandad, this set is also the one that reaches out to me most initially, due to the many competitive decks within it. The most attractive one to me is Common Enemy, as stated in a previous article having both Heavy Hitter and Diabolical Genius is a pure joy for me, as well as the opportunity to control the opponents board and attacks whilst still having a viable attack strategy, making the most use out of Clobbering Times, Signal Flares and of course all the Doom flavoured love that pretty much terrifies the be-jesus out of any weenie rush deck you may come across.

The other attractive factor of the deck is it’s ability to be consistent yet flexible, a trait that I value above all else when considering deck construction, to name but a view we have Boris, Doomstadt/Faces of Doom, the aforementioned Signal Flare and the choice between up curve swings (Heavy Hitter is once again mentioned – can you tell which Vs card is my favourite yet?) or tactical Weenie hate (Robot Destroyer steps up) This deck can pretty much search and handle anything thrown its way, its one problem being its occasional lack of consistency and a definitive finish when compared to such beasts as Galactus.

The next deck that springs to mind is another great example of a deck archetype, this time one that plans to finish the game almost as soon as Doom starts to plan his evil plans, the incredibly effective New Brotherhood/Medium Brotherhood. The reason I combine the two decks is that there similarities are obvious and the choice of which deck to play often comes down to player preference i.e. try to kill quick but with no contingency plan, or do a little less quick damage, but with a viable mid game strategy that can be devastating.

This is another deck that I’m seriously considering as the combos, mixed with great early board presence, is something that I find very appealing. The obvious problem is that since there release Squadron Supreme and AGL’s have done the same, only better. It is with this in mind that medium brotherhood, with it’s power up goodness and Genosha fuelled attack pumps becomes the more attractive of the two, allowing the deck to hold it’s own against weenies whilst also finishing potential stall decks by turns five or, at the worst, six. However the ever present Doom and Spiderman are making me veer away from the more aggro decks, especially as I enjoy games lasting longer than it takes me to drink a Pepsi.

Another deck that is a serious consideration simply for the nostalgia involved is Gamma Doom, being a bit of a control freak myself it should come as no surprise that I avidly enjoy shutting down every option an opposing player has of competing, through multiple exhaustion effects and an ever present Bomb it is possible not only to beat an opponent, but almost humiliate them at the same time. There are a few problems such as consistency again, and also negation effects ruin this deck more than Brett Ratner ruined X-men 3. Whilst an ever present possibility, it is unlikely that this deck shall be my first choice, as the repetitiveness involved could prove taxing after a whole days play.

Briefly touching on the X-men, I am of the strong belief that without the likes of Bamf to keep there characters around they do not have enough tricks, in combat or otherwise, to make them tournament viable. However there constant appearance in sets throughout vs. means that they could still have there spot, but as far as Origins is concerned they are going to have to take a back seat I’m afraid. The same goes for the Fantastic Four; outside of Common Enemy I believe them too weak to make a mono-team deck out of.

The last two decks I want to look at from Origins are the Sentinels namely Curve and Wild Vomit, and it is by no mere coincidence that I have left the team that perhaps had the most impact on the early life of Vs until the end of the article. Curve Sentinels were my first thought when I found that the upcoming tournament was going to be Bring Your Own Set! After all what a way to come back to competitive versus than piloting one of the all time greats, then it hit me – no Sentinel Mark V, no Hounds Lock and, from more recent times, no Mobilizes for consistency, as quickly as it popped into my head I was listing the reasons why I should leave the deck on the sidelines.

My disappointment at having to leave one of my favourite decks behind was quickly surpassed by my interest in Wild Vomit, seeming to remember it doing quite well in some tournament somewhere I hit The System and duly found that a guy in a banana suit had top 8’d with Wild Vomit (wow Stu, typing that really does give you a perverse joy). Whilst loving the unique nature of the deck and its undeniable high fun factor I am one of those pesky traditionalists who love beating people in the face, preferably whilst shouting ‘It’s Clobberin’ time!’

The other great draw towards playing a deck from Origins is the Plot Twists and Locations it opens up for you, such classics as Savage Beatdowns, Flame Traps and Nasty Surprises all come back for you to play with, and often having the difference between good support and great support is all it takes to swing a game in your favour. You may have guessed that so far Common Enemy is my favoured deck, its unique ability to mix flavour, fun and functionality being the largest draw for me, however once deck testing starts I may find a previously unseen flaw and this may all change. Watch this space.
